The UAMS South Arkansas Center on Aging provides a number of different classes and programs meant to help area residents live their best lives as they get older.
The UAMS South Arkansas Center on Aging Education Center, a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, is led by Bethany Moore. Moore is dedicated to improving the
lives of older adults, supporting caregivers and improving quality of life for those living with dementia. As the aging population continues to rise in South Arkansas, the Center on Aging is committed to providing services that improve
the health and well-being of older adults living within our region. The center is also committed to adapting their services to meet the changing needs of our community.
Education Coordinator Lori DeWese has been with the center for over nine years and has a passion for improving the quality of life for all older adults in South Arkansas. She facilitates free educational programs, in partnership with many community organizations, to older adults and their families on a daily basis for the center. Through health education, exercise, socialization and laughter, she makes a positive impact on each
person she meets.
UAMS South Arkansas Center on Aging does their
part to keep older adults vibrant, or as DeWese said she likes to call it OWLS (older wiser livelier seniors) through community programs such as:
HEAT (Healthy Eating & Tasting) - second Tuesday of every month at HealthWorks Fitness Center at 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This program
is booming with 40 attendees every month. It is interactive and fosters improvement in nutritional aspects of lifestyle by focusing on components of nutrition such as food, exercise, behavior change and social support. Most of all we have fun while learning small changes we can incorporate from local restaurants, businesses and individuals on how to make a meal or food item a little healthier and, best of all, everyone gets to taste it! A light lunch is also included which is catered by Paula’s catering. This program is free to community members ages 55 and better and you do not need to be a member of HealthWorks to attend. Our partners are HealthWorks, SouthArk Library and MCSA – Community Strong!
DEEP (Diabetes Empowerment Education Program) – this program is provided free of charge twice a year to the community. We partner with Terry Clark at HealthWorks fitness center. This is a six-week program aimed at those with diabetes, those with a high risk of developing
diabetes, such as family members and friends and/or those who are caretakers of a person
with diabetes. They will get hands-on training on understanding food labels, meal planning and other tips. This class is also interactive and is much like Las Vegas ... what happens here, stays here!
We provide a monthly nutrition program at Champagnolle Landing to help educate our population on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Our topics may include: how to read a food label, how to eat healthier, reaching your nutrition goals, eating tidbits around the holidays.
Connect and Learn – We partner with Courtyard Health & Rehab on this program. Quarterly gathering with various health topics and presenters. The program’s mission is to engage and help older adults to remain healthy and social as they age. A light meal is provided. This program
is at 6 p.m. to encourage those who still work or provide care for a loved one to attend.
Ageless Grace - I can’t say enough about this free anti-aging exercise program. This program demonstrates 21 simple tools for lifelong comfort and ease. The movement sequences focus on the healthy longevity of the body, mind, emotions and spirit. All of the exercises are designed to be
