Soul food search
Sherri Shepherd tours the country in ‘Holy & Hungry’
Sherri Shepherd hosts “Holy & Hungry”

Who doesn’t love soul food? Those amazing dishes that are steeped in southern and African- American cultures, like fried chicken, cornbread, fried okra — yum!
That’s not the kind of soul food that actress and cookbook author Sherri Shepherd is checking out in her Cooking Channel show, though — at least, not exclusively. “Holy & Hungry,” which has been airing on Sunday evenings, follows the former “The View” co-host as she travels around the country to find people whose deep faith combines with their love of cooking.
The season finale airs on Sun- day, Sept. 27, and it’s going to be a mouth-watering episode.
First, Sherri’s swinging by S. Egidio in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where a former friar is making a pizza mar- garita that’s so good that it might be a miracle. Then, she’s headed up to Brooklyn where she’ll visit an Ethio- pian restaurant that’s known for its absolutely heavenly doro wett, a chicken stew with an African twist.
Still in the Big Apple, Sherri will stop by The Food Sermon Kitchen for some Caribbean food, and after that she’ll meet an Islamic butcher in New York’s Lower East Side to learn about Halal meat and how it ties into the Muslim faith.
A deeply religious Christian her- self, Sherri Shepherd never shied away from her beliefs during her time in “The View.” Of course, that talk show is far from her only claim to fame. She headlined her own Show-
time sitcom, “Sherri,” has starred in a major Broadway production (“Cin- derella”) and starred opposite Chris Rock in the 2014 film “Top Five.”
Food, though, is a true passion of hers. Having lived with pre-diabetes for years, and now having Type 2 diabetes, she’s made it her mission to help people change their diets. It’s led her to write two cookbooks, which have made her a New York Times bestselling author of “Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabe- tes (Even if You Don’t Have It)” and “Permission Slips: Every Woman’s Guide to Giving Herself a Break.”
Good food and good faith: for Sherri Shepherd and for people all over the country, they go hand in hand. “Holy & Hungry’s” season finale airs Sunday, Sept. 27, on Cook- ing Channel.
