PUBLISHER
Grab those flip-flops and lather up the sunscreen; summer is here, finally! Now although things are not quite back to normal, it is getting there. It is important to remember that while we can have our fun in the sun, that does not mean anyone’s health should be put at risk. However, that does not mean we must sacrifice our golden tans and waterside cocktails. We are all adults here and can work together to overcome any obstacle.
Speaking of working together, the executive director of Jackson House just may be an expert on the subject. Janie Smith, the legacy of the Eleanor Klugh Jackson House for Crisis Intervention Services, Inc. founder Rev. Harry Woodall, has more than 20 years of expe- rience helping those who have trouble advocating for themselves. Although she never dreamed of carrying on her father’s legacy, Smith has taken her background in psychology and working with the disabled to become part of the solution in Hot Springs. We sat down with Smith this month not only to reflect on her years of service but how the Jackson Hows managed to stay afloat during a global pandemic. Let us just say that Smith is on the ball when it comes to running this nonprofit. And her phone never stops ringing!
Local belly dancer Cassandra Parks also graced us with her pres- ence this month to teach us there is more to the art of belly dance than meets the eye. For her, it is not only a “health pick-me-up,” but provides her with confidence and a sense of physical connection. Her passion ignited after viewing the documentary “American Bel- lydancer.” From there, she went on a journey of self-acceptance and self-discovery through the art of belly dancing. We are not sure what is more impressive, the time and effort she puts into getting ready for a performance or the performances themselves. She is mesmerizing.
We met up again with our friend and resident Garland County Extension agent Alison Crane, for sweet, simple recipes just in time for summer. Think watermelons, sugar, and then start humming that new Harry Styles song. It is a great tune to listen to as you sip on a watermelon mint julep or snack on the watermelon sorbet you will learn how to make in this issue. Through a partnership with the Garland County EHC and Harps Food Stores, 146 Thorton Ferry Road, HER Magazine is able to bring you these wonderful recipes every other month.
Although many of our favorite summertime activities are modi- fied, for now, there is still plenty to do in the Natural State, especially locally. It just takes some creativity. Just remember to keep washing those hands and follow the advice of our medical professionals. We will all get through this by working together.
