PUBLISHER
Despite its brevity, the month of February knows how to pack a punch. According to nationaltoday.com, a website dedicated to keeping track of even the wackiest of holidays, there are 87 officially unofficial holidays in February. Add in the fact this is also a leap year and the calendar is probably already full. National Drink Wine Day on Feb. 18 and National Chocolate Souffle Day will both definitely make the cut. However, the more notable events include Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, Presidents Day, and Black History Month.
To pay homage to the accomplishments and cultural contribu- tions made by members of the African American community, we sat down with Linda Franklin, acting president of the National As- sociation for the Advancement of Colored People Unit 6013. With 20 years of experience volunteering with the NAACP in some capacity, Franklin has dedicated most of her time to helping others. Franklin is one of several female members who have served at the helm of the organization in the past. She also spent 25 years as a college educator. During her interview, Franklin revealed her motivation behind her work and her optimism for the community’s future.
This month’s issue also features the second installment of HER Around the Table, our simple yet satisfying new recipe section. Through partnerships with Harps Food Stores, 146 Thornton Ferry Road, and Alison Crane from the Garland County Cooperative Ex- tension Service Office, HER Magazine is able to bring readers tasty recipes that are tried and true. In addition to recipes, Crane will also provide food “hacks” that will help keep you on track when it comes to healthy habits. This month, Crane brings three dishes that are perfect for any upcoming meetings and potluck luncheons. While they are easy to make, each dish is also light enough to help you not regret indulging later on.
Curiosity and a love of fermented grapes finally got the better of us this month. A new addition to the ever-growing “side town” area on Ouachita Avenue, Splash Wine bar has made ... well, a big splash. This wine bar serves a wide variety of different varieties and vintages. Owned by local entrepreneur Cathy Caver, this would be waiting room for the second location of her spa thankfully turned into a new hot spot for Hot Springs.
As always, we hope you enjoy reading this month’s issue of HER Magazine. Don’t forget to send your suggestions for future articles to our associate editor, Grace Brown, at gbrown@hotsr. We look forward to hearing from you. Happy reading,
the HERstaff
