Means to an end

After his first four years in the service, Means was ready to leave. He was in San Francisco at the Treasure Island Naval Base, known then for being a place where people were processed out of the service. However, he was asked to stay and given a post in Hawaii.
There, another interest of his blossomed: helping rescued animals. Mt. Pinatubo’s 1991 eruption in the Philippines forced many to evacuate. At that time, in Hawaii and Guam, where most of the people were sent, animals that came into the areas had to undergo a mandatory three-month quarantine. Many families were separated from their pets when Guam’s facility could not handle the load, and that was where Means came in.
Means and his wife, Colleen, became ‘Pet Pals’ to two Doberman pinschers named Nicki and Sparky. They visited the dogs regularly, feeding them treats and petting them through their quarantine cages. Oth- ers joined, creating a small, temporary organization to tend to those animals’ needs.
