A sad and frequent part of childhood at the turn of the century was the death of a

child. It is not surprising that one of the favorite childhood games of that time was

playing “funeral”. Girls would select a doll for burial and conduct a service for the
3x5
doll. The dolls were often dug up for further play but occasionally the doll stayed buried. These dolls in our collection were donated by Lucy R. Gibney.
The following excerpt was written by Ms. Gibney.
The small “Frozen Charlotte” doll is named Nell after the late Nell Hammond. Her mother, my great aunt, was killed in a tornado. Of course, all the aunts adopted Nell gladly. So much love in this family. The movable “Charlotte” type doll is Virginia. Virginia was the most outgoing of the sisters and her doll was one of the most buried of dolls.
The Nancy doll is blonde and elegant – and so was Nancy. The Jack doll is named for a neighbor. The small baby doll is Bessie. My grandmother’s Dewie” doll was never found. It is still buried, somewhere.
