This year the last Saturday before Christmas, called
“Super Saturday,” also hap- pens to be Christmas Eve.
According to the website, smallbiztrends.com, Super Saturday typically occurs on the last Saturday before Christmas, though many retailers start sales as early as a week prior.
This year, since Super Saturday falls on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 will be the shop- ping event when consumers scramble to finish (or start) their gift lists and retail- ers try to push slow-selling merchandise.
When you head out next weekend for your last min- ute shopping, be sure to visit all the locally owned businesses in El Dorado and Union County in search of that perfect gift.
“Shopping local saves in both time and fuel, especial- ly with the extra shopping needs during our holidays,” said El Dorado Mayor Frank Hash. “Shopping locally also
helps our local shop own- ers to compete with on-line shopping and to continue to improve their available products.”
Traditionally, both Super Saturday and Christmas Eve are huge shopping days for the retail community as consumers hurry to get the final items on their holiday gift lists.
This year, however, both Christmas Eve and the first day of Hanukkah fall on Super Saturday — which is good and bad news for inde- pendent retailers, according to the website.
Many customers will be traveling to visit relatives or hunkering down with their families to celebrate the hol- idays.
This could mean that Dec. 17 — the Saturday before Super Saturday — will take on greater impor- tance because last minute shoppers will need to get their gift purchases fin- ished before heading out Christmas weekend.
The good news for local retailers is that, with Super Saturday on Christmas
Eve, consumers who need last-minute gifts will be far more likely to run out to local stores rather than choose online shopping, according to the webiste.
This could spell opportu- nity for local small busi- nesses to beat the big guys.
In addition, the first day of Hanukkah (the holiday lasts for eight days) falling on Super Saturday means that in the week after Christmas, last-minute Hanukkah shop- pers can also shop locally.
Our local vendors simply can’t improve their ser- vices if only small numbers patronize them,” Hash said. “Just as important, shop- ping locally keeps sales tax locally and helps the city in providing essential services that all of us depend upon.”
Shopping with local retail- ers is not just good business, it is good for the entire com- munity.
“Shopping locally also helps our very own to stay in business and to provide jobs for our own,” Hash said.
“I hope all have a great holiday season and have a Merry Christmas!”
