Scotland Presbyterian Church marks 171st anniversary
By Janice McIntyre
Scotland Presbyterian Church, located at 2046 Wesson Road in
Junction City, celebrated its 171st anniversary this year and held its annual home- coming service and potluck on June 12.
Scotland Presbyterian Church was organized in 1845 by the Rev. Aaron Williams, a domestic mis- sionary. According to a history of the church com- piled by former Union County Judge Carlton Jerry of Junction City, in 1845 Williams organized Scotland Presbyterian – the former site of the McCorvey Presbyterian Mission from 1841 to 1845. The mission was built by Daniel McCorvey and his wife, Nancy Buie, along with Daniel’s moth- er, Mrs. Finlah (Annabella) McCorvey, on their land.
Annabella had come to join Neil and Mary McCorvey, Daniel’s brother, who came to the area in 1836. In 1845, Aaron Williams founded the church and organized it. He was a professor from a college in South Carolina. Along with a former stu- dent, A. R. Banks, he came by way of Mississippi, receiving permission from the senate of Mississippi to work in Arkansas as a mis- sionary.
The building, erected by the congregation, was of logs and without a floor. It was hard to hear and there were times when ser- vices had to be discontin- ued during severe winter months, according to histor- ical records of the church.
Annabella McCorvey named the church Scotland because she was born in Scotland and wanted this church to be like the one she knew and attended as
County. It is also the old- est church in the county, pre-dating the Mount Holly church by five months.
