Past: A look back at Easter in Union County churches
Easter 1957: April 21
“Life Eternal,” a cantata by Fred B. Halton, was performed on Good Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The combined adult and youth choirs were directed by Mrs. Ed Warren. The text was written by Mattie B. Shannon.
A sunrise service, sponsored by Our Savior Lutheran Church, was held at the 7 Drive-In Theater. The guest speaker was Dr. Alfred von Rohr Sauer, professor of Hebrew and Old Testament interpretation at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.
Holy Week services were spon- sored by local civic clubs in El Dorado. The Kiwanis Club hosted the Monday service, with the Jaycees following on Tuesday, the Rotary Club on Wednesday, the Lions Club on Maundy Thursday and Civitan on Good Friday. Participating churches were the First Baptist Church, First Methodist Church,
First Christian Church and First Methodist Church.
The Rev. T.C. Smith, newly appointed pastor of the Oneness Pentecostal Church, made his pas- toral debut at the church on Palm Sunday. Before coming to Union County, the Rev. Smith had been a pastor in Little Rock and Biloxi. He replaced the Rev. J.S. Whitt.
A Palm Sunday performance of Brahms’ “Requiem” was held at 5 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church. The choir was directed by William Trego. Mrs. Stephen Alexander was the accom- panist. Soloists included Mrs. Lewis Nelson, soprano, and Raymond M. Gilbert, baritone.

The guest speaker from Galilee Baptist Church was Perry Henderson.
First Christian Church held a Maundy Thursday service with anthems by the Crusader Boys’ Choir and the Sanctuary Choir with director Raymond Gilbert. The Carol and Bethany Choirs were directed by Mrs. Lewis C. Nelson.
There was a Communion service. The 6 a.m. Easter service featured a special Easter meditation by the Rev. Durward Penry.
A sunrise service was held at 5:30 a.m. at Triumph Church with a sermon by the Rev. Johnny Brown.
Longview Baptist Church had a sunrise service at 6 a.m. with the Rev. Simon Armstrong.
