A Great New Year’s Resolution: Learn How To Do Nothing
By The Rev. Chuck Chapman
Chances are, if you’ve made a New Year’s resolution, you either resolved to put forth the effort
either to stop or start doing some certain thing. I’d like to suggest doing something really difficult, but which can be very beneficial: nothing.
Our lives are filled from feet on the ground to feet back on the bed with activities and obligations. We’re allowing our lives to be filled with activity, con- vinced that it’s absolutely necessary; and we’re infecting our children with this
same diseased mentality.
God invented something extremely
valuable, essential for our physical, emo- tional, and spiritual well-being: Sabbath time. In the Judeo-Christian tradition this was a day — the Sabbath Day. Jews observed Saturday, and Christians, Sunday.
Things are much different now. Sundays are just another shopping day for many, if not most.
So what is “Sabbath Time” and how do we practice it in the 21st century?
