20th annual SouthArk Outdoor Expo returns Sept. 8
Special to the News-Times
The 20th SouthArk Outdoor Expo, set for Sept. 8 and put on by the South Arkansas Community College Foundation, will include a full day of exhibits, live music, children’s activities and outdoor-themed vendors and exhibits.
The event will be held on the grounds of the
El Dorado Conference Center. There is no entry fee, but donations of canned or packaged food are encouraged. These donations will be donated to the Interfaith Help Services food bank in El Dorado.
The SouthArk Outdoor Expo benefits SouthArk students by raising money for scholarships
and special initiatives of the college through sponsorships and booth and contest fees.
The day will begin with the Nexans Amercable Maj. Ronald Wayne Culver Hero 5K Run-Walk at 7:30 a.m. Other contests are the Withrow Family Rib Cookoff, an outdoor photography contest, a dog show and a car show. Contest winners will be awarded cash prizes, including more than $5,000 for the cookoff.
Children’s activities include archery, air rifle target shooting, face painting and a magic show. Vendors will sell outdoor wares such as duck calls, sportswear, riding lawn mowers and fishing equipment.
Live music will played on an outdoor stage throughout the day, with appearances by Aces Wild Band, Cory Jackson and local trio Tunesmith.
This event is the foundation’s flagship
fundraiser, having raised close to $600,000 in its history.
“We are fortunate that Apex Redi-Mixed Concrete Company is once again our title sponsor,” said SouthArk Foundation Board President Greg Withrow. “Our board of directors

Registration open for 5K
Registration is open for the Nexans Amercable Maj. Ronald Wayne Culver Hero 5K Run-Walk, part of the SouthArk Outdoor Expo, slated for Sept. 8.
The cost to register is $30 through race day. Race packets may be picked up from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 7 in the west concourse of the El Dorado Conference Center, or between 6:15 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. Sept. 8 at the check-in tent at the corner of Locust and Washington Streets. The race will start at 7:30 a.m.
The route runs from the corner of Cedar and Washington to Jackson, then to Griffin, where it turns around and follows the same path again and finishes where it started.
The race is named in honor of Culver, who was killed while on a deployment to Iraq in 2010. He was an employee at Nexans Amercable, which sponsors the race.
Winners will be recognized in 12 different age divisions and both genders. The top overall male and female finishers will receive $100 prizes. Door prizes also will be awarded.
