Whether you enjoy comedy, drama, action or romance, chances are your favorite big- and small-screen stars started out on stage. For many, theater remains their first love, and the ultimate stage is a Broadway stage.
James Corden (“The Late Late Show”) celebrates the best of Broad- way as he hosts the 70th Annual Tony Awards, airing Sunday, June 12, on CBS. Corden is a Tony winner himself, actu- ally. In 2012, he nabbed a coveted Best Performance by a Leading Actor award for his portrayal of Francis Henshall in “One Man, Two Guvnors.” Sunday, he graces the stage of New York’s Beacon Theatre to honor this year’s nominees.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Tony Awards,” said Corden in a CBS statement. “Both times I’ve worked
on Broadway have been amongst the happiest times of my professional life.
I consider it a huge honor to be asked to host such an incredible night. It’s gonna be fun, I can’t wait to dust off my tap shoes.”
Best known in the U.K. for his work in the BBC sitcom “Gavin & Stacey,” Corden has proven his mettle as a performer with a diverse body of work on stage and screen. He’s had huge success on social media, thanks to his “Late Late Show” viral videos such as “Carpool Karaoke,” which have been
viewed hundreds of millions of times. The multitalented Brit is wildly popular right now, and he’s in good company at the Tonys.
This year’s milestone anniver-
sary of the awards has already been record-breaking — the musical “Hamilton” has earned nominations in 16 categories, which makes it the most-nominated production in Tony Awards history. A retelling of America’s fiery past, the Revolution-era play was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Do No Harm”) and features such historical figures as Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Hamilton and Aaron Burr. “Hamilton” is up for Best Musical, numerous best actor nods, costume design, choreogra- phy and more.
While many productions made it onto the marquis with one or two nominations, there are a few others that have the potential to win big at this year’s awards ceremony. “Shuffle Along, or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Fol- lowed” clocks in second with 10 Tony nominations. The show travels back in time to trace the roots of Broadway musicals with the production that started it all.
TV stars Zachary Levi (“Chuck”) and Jane Krakowski (“30 Rock”) appear
in the romantic musical “She Loves Me,” which is in the running for eight awards, including Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Levi and Best Performance by a Leading Ac- tress in a Musical for Krakowski.
The Eugene O’Neill classic “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” has earned seven Tony nominations. Both Gabriel Byrne (“The Usual Suspects,” 1995) and Jessica Lange (“Blue Sky,” 1994) have been honored with leading ac-
tor and actress nominations for their roles in the play about a family’s struggle with addiction and
illness. Fans of
AMC’s “The Walking Dead” may recog- nize Danai Gurira in the audience
as her play, “Eclipsed,” is up for Best Play and five
other awards. Starring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave,” 2013), the drama tells the tales of five Liberian women near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. Gurira
is up against fellow writer Stephen Karam, whose play “The Humans,” about a family that gathers in New York for Thanksgiving, is also nominated for six Tonys.
There are a number of productions that have earned five nominations each, including Arthur Miller’s “A View From the Bridge,” “Bright Star” and “King Charles III.” Other notable nomi- nations include “SCTV” alum Andrea Martin and Broadway veteran Megan Hilty (“Smash”), who are both up for Best Performance by a Featured Actress for their work in “Noises Off.” Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) could take home the statuette for Best Performance
by a Leading Actress in a Play for her portrayal of “Misery” villain Annie Wil- kes opposite Bruce Willis (“Die Hard,” 1988). Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom”) and Michelle Williams (“Brokeback Mountain,” 2005) have both been nominated for their leading roles in “Blackbird.” Also, “The Color Purple” is up for Best Revival of a Musical.
All of these productions carry on a long-standing Broadway tradition of excellence in theater, which has been recognized by the Tony Awards since its inception in 1947. Though they are more commonly known as the Tonys today, the true moniker is The Antoi-
nette Perry Award for Excel- lence in Theatre, named
for the co-founder of the American Theatre Wing.
