• Tamara Smith, Industrial Technology Coordinator for SHSD, explained that Strong is the only school in the state of Arkansas that provides OSHA-10 training.
“We just want to let our students know that it is okay if they choose not to go to college and that there are other opportunities. We are so proud to be able to offer these certifications to our students who choose to go into the workforce after graduation,” she said.
In addition, the school also has NCCER credentials in introductory to craft skills, carpentry, electrical, plumbing (small motors and HVAC insulation), mechanical and electri- cal.
“These are the same certifications that men and women in the work- force use and it’s such an important thing. That’s what makes us so special and we are the only place in Union County that has these certifications,” she explained.
Smith is a board member of the Arkansas Association of Skilled and Technical Sciences.
• Elementary is 100 percent out of academic distress and the High School is roughly one year away from being out of distress, Smith noted.
• Alphin explained that there are no major handbook changes this year,
however, caps, hats and headwear will not be allowed on campus during regular school hours. Cell phone use is permitted before and after school and devices (including headphones) must be concealed at all other times.
